Fr Alex Taylor RIP

When I was working with Alex Taylor at St John’s College in 1983, in a relaxed moment at end of a school day, he told me of an event which helped him decide to become a priest.
As a 17 year old rugby rep for Hawkes Bay he was playing one Saturday at “the Park,” (McLean Park, Napier) with a huge crowd, when a wing ran past good defense for the try line, with everyone screaming encouragement till right at the try line he accidentally dropped the ball. The crowd suddenly en masse hissed and booed derision. Alex was appalled by the sudden change in crowd hysteria and the consequent dishonour of the player and decided there and then to do something less cruel and more useful.
